Old Patagonian Express and Route 40
Topic: Old Patagonia Express

In the Patagonian southern lands of Argentina train lovers from around the world can find what has come to be a railways icon: The Old Patagonian Express, still running today on narrow gauge tracks only 29.5 inches wide.
The Old Patagonian Express was commissioned in 1945 and was affectionately christened by the locals as 'La Trochita' because its narrow tracks.

Until 1993 it was used as a welfare train and ran from Esquel up to Ingeniero Jacobaci in Rio Negro province, and today it is one of the major tourist attractions still running and providing its passengers with an outstanding panoramic view of a magical area of nature and history. 'La Trochita' has, after nearly a half a century, become a national historic monument of the Argentine Patagonian steppes.

‘La Trochita’ is worldly famous because it is the only narrow gauge track train in the world that’s still functioning, featuring American and German Machines from "The Baldwyn Locomotive Works" of Philadelphia and  "Henschel&Sohn GmbH" from Cassal Germany.

According to the historical reconstruction, the Argentine Government requested for 50 Henschel Locomotives and 25 Baldwyn Locomotives to be delivered to Patagonia Light Railways in 1922. Originally manufactured by both firms to be able to be adapted to petrol combustion in stead of coal, these locomotives also feature a heavier weight that the average in these sorts of machines in order to improve its pulling capacity. This unique feature has allowed these locomotives to keep on functioning using all its original features until today: steam engine powered by paraffin petrol supplied by the El Maiten Railway Workshops, where the experts work upon the original blueprints and jealously keep this amazing train as close to the original 1922 version as possible.    See Photo Gallery.......

The History of Case Tractors in Argentina

The History of Case Tractors in Argentina is that of the development and
growth of the Latin American fields. As it's world wide known, Argentina was
for a very long time the World's barn. And in this picture, tractors and
growth of field productivity is the key element.

Case steam tractors are a landmark of the Argentine field, especially if we
take into account the fact that this was the earliest international field
company to settle in Buenos Aires and take the Argentine capital as the
ground base operation centre for the rest of the South American Continent.

See Picture Image Photo Gallery of these Case Tractors from around the 1960’s:

The story began in 1842 in Rochester, Wisconsin. It was then when Jerome
Increase Case started his company. He soon moved to Racine, and it was there
where he began to manufacture threshers.

In 1953 Case and his partners brought into life the J.I. Case & Company,
usually better known from 1865 onwards through means of its trademark:
Eagle, "Old Abe".

After these ground braking inventions and adaptations Case did not put a
stop to his inventive and wit. In 1869 he built his first steam engine
pulled by horses. American experts say that Old No. 1 is now on display in
the Smithsonian Institution; this was wheel-mounted but still drawn by
horses and used only for belt power. In 1876 their first steam traction
engine was ready; and it was in 1892 when he launched the first Case farm
tractor.

By 1890 the rapid and amazing growth of the Argentine fields and the
increase within the demand by European countries leads the South American
business to a sustained growth. Such was the fast growing rate that Case
finds productive to open a branch office in Buenos Aires. As we pointed out
above this was the first branch of a U.S. based company in this industry
ever to be established in Argentina. Later, two more branches are opened
there. And the success within the country and the region was indeed
unquestionable.

Even at this early stage of the 20th century, the South American region
began to increase its technical skills within the field. Argentina was the
door through which these innovations entered the sub continent.

This means that Argentina was the starting point for the distribution of
these tractors, and the place where the broadest variety of models could
(and still can) be found.

In 1920 Case penetrates the final bastion of the Latin American region as it
conquers the Brazilian market.

And by the end of the 20s Argentina would become a true laboratory for
experimental models for the rest of the world. Indeed some true gems can be
found here from the very early days of this tractor company.

The story of Case in Argentina kept on growing at an amazing rate even after
other American and European companies began to exploit this fertile market.

Buying Real Estate along Route 40, Argentina
Topic: Real Estate Argentina

Even if you’re one of those people who loves their job and doesn’t mention the possible retirement as an exiting option, the possibility of living without the hazard of time-table hard work is indeed appealing.

It doesn’t mean that you’re going to become a lazy person, sitting all day long watching TV and sipping your delightful ice tea (though you could if you wanted to, and no one could say anything, you’ve given your share to society)… It only means that you’re pressure-free, that you’re your life’s only master. Indeed you can still work and develop all those wonderful projects that have been sitting in your mind all these years; or may be travel around the world, or even better… find yourself a gorgeous getaway dream home and live permanently in it.

There’s not a single person in the world that would refuse to stop working and do whatever they feel like. This may be a super sophisticated image people have on retirement. Especially these days, in which the world is becoming not such a pleasant place to be in, the economy is upside down and very few people manage to retire at 50.
Even when you do, there’s so much you need to take care of in this ever changing world that most surely, the present would look very little like the image you’ve been picturing the last couple of years.

However, as Ying and Yang, the coin has indeed two complementing sides… If the possibilities of a peaceful and royal like retirement are closing in the most developed countries such as the US, France, Spain, UK and Germany; many outstanding opportunities are opening in the developing countries. Argentina is, indeed, a fine example of an alternative retirement opportunity.

The variety of options is as broad as there are climates, regions and cultures in our country to explore.

Far south the lovely Patagonia region where peace and quiet, nature and sophistication go hand in hand is one of the best required places for elder couples or singles. The strong European touch of the many Welsh and German communities that have settled in the area welcomes the foreigner as a local (especially there will be no striking aesthetic and cultural difference). The northern region of our country is indeed one of the world’s unspoiled paradises with virgin nature surrounding you and a wonderful mild weather that would improve body functions is one other wonderful alternative.
Of course, if you’re willing to leave your comfortable home back in the States and you’re planning to upscale your life standard to royalty, Buenos Aires is the place. Featuring a strong Parisian feel with a touch of Latin style this city exudes an everlasting strong cultural life very appealing and interesting both to the local and the visitor.

If indeed Argentina’s beautiful landscapes and endearing culture are a strong pro –though these can be found elsewhere in the world too- , the ultimate decision making feature is the fact that Argentina’s economy features a very positive dollar-peso rate, has a superb health care system, medicines are indeed relatively cheap (specially comparing American and European Standards) and Real Estates is at it’s perfect moment for acquisition. Even more, the elder mature “citizens of the world” will feel very at ease in this European-Latino cultural environment.

In recent weeks both Fortune and the official AARP Bulletin have agreed on the fact that Argentina is one of the top destinations for retried Americans these days. Even more, these days the Social Security Administration is involved in an international direct deposit system that provides for the transfer and conversion of your Social Security benefits right into the participating foreign bank. Called electronic benefit transfers, these are now available to U.S. retirees moving to Argentina.

The experts agree on the fact that Argentina is now a strong alternative to a Florida condominium. The excitement of moving into a new and sophisticated culture, a great upscale value of your life’s savings and your social security and the peacefulness of a country that has faded away it’s critical economy (though this was even more appealing for dollar-oriented savings having reached a 4 to 1 exchange rate) as well as the modern communications available in the country (Internet and world wide airport communication) make of Argentina these days’ best retirement alternative.

Investing in the future, in land in Argentina and Chile.
See Picture Gallery of some parts of the south of Argentina:

Link to Photo Album Argentina in Photos Part 3

Our planet is our only home, our only hope to remain living like humans. But, given the fact that we are contradictory beings, our indiscriminate “use” of our planet earth is resulting to into us digging our own grave. We’re taking more than what we’re putting in, and every one knows –from a business man to a farmer- that this equation is intrinsically wrong.
The fact that in these days our troubled relationship with our environment, by means of climate alterations, floodings and several other unusual natural disorders makes of this matter an urgent issue to address before it is too late. Activists from all over the world have gained a tribune –in media and in a growing portion of non governmental organizations- to discuss these problems and to act accordingly.

World around there are taking place all sort of initiatives and programs to revert the mark our forefathers have left on our planet. However in the majority of the cases this is carried on –not by local governments- but by private individuals who “invest” their money not in money-profitable risk investments, but into socially and culturally important matters.

For worldwide unusual magnates, investing in this particular pro-ecological- non -profitable Real Estate has become a way of living.
Such is the case of the American fashion industry millionaire Douglas Tompkins and his wife Kristine. Back in the early 80s and 90s Tompkins was the proud owner of Espirit clothing brand. His business was a true success. However, by 1991 we thought it was time to change. He sold his shares and bought up 741,200 acres of forest and fjord in a remote and largely uninhabited area of Southern Chile -- not to develop or log off the land, but to conserve it. Tompkins’ beliefs [1] made him turn his life of commodities in the country of the North, and change his present –and hopefully his (and ours as humanity) future.

Recently he broadened his project; he and his wife bought a superb piece of land in the north east region of Argentina –Esteros de Ibera (Ibera estuaries) as a way of furthering his work to recuperate part of the area’s natural equilibrium by helping endangered species.

This is an outstanding project, and for better or worst it has not passed unnoticed. Supporters and detractors have much to say.
The first thing one might think is: Why on earth would someone be against this philanthropic venture to help our planet?

The answer is indeed historical and political mainly due to the fact that several millions of acres in Argentina and the rest of South America are being sold to private individuals who exploit natural reservations. Even more, some people argued that Tompkins was “washing” dirty money by means of these millionaire transactions.

So far, none of the accusations was made on solid grounds, and the actions taken on by the American philanthropic couple have proven these detractors wrong.

The main goal of the project is not to profit –economically- out of these investments, but to profit in cultural, social, historical and ecological ways. One outstanding feature of their project is the explicit statement that once the environment in question is recuperated, it would be yielded to the local governments as National Park Reservations.

One thing is certain to me; given the fact that we’ve been attacking our homeland throughout centuries to an unbelievable extent (considering the repercussions we’ve been suffering lately), when someone without other intentions than those explicit in his actions shows up to do something good without asking for any private retribution we should be grateful and hope that one day we all stop hurting our environment, for it’s the only one we have.

[1]He defines himself as an ecological activist. It is well known that he stands for what is known as deep ecology. This is a philosophy for life that conceives the world not centered in mankind, but as a complex equilibrium of natural forces. This is a science of ecology, which emphasizes the fact that all things are connected, are related; that human beings are merely one of the millions of species that have been shaped by the process of evolution for three and a half billion years.
